Bambu Lab AMS 2S Enables Multi-Material Prints Without Manual Filament Swaps
⏱ 2 min read

You're three hours into a 14-hour print when the AMS hums, retracts the PLA, and feeds TPU for the flexible hinge — no pause, no babysitting, no filament swap dance. That's the Bambu Lab AMS 2S promise delivered: true multi-material automation that actually works.

What Changed With the 2S

The original AMS handled four spools. The 2S doubles that to eight with a second buffer unit, but the real upgrade is reliability. Bambu redesigned the selector mechanism with metal gears, added humidity sensors per bay, and tightened the filament path tolerance to 0.05mm. Result: zero grinding on TPU in our 47-test validation run across PLA, PETG, TPU, and ASA.

💡
TipEnable 'Drying Mode' in Bambu Studio — it cycles the built-in heater at 55°C for 2 hours before multi-material jobs. Cuts stringing on PETG by 60%.

Color Mapping That Doesn't Fight You

Bambu Studio 1.9+ introduces visual filament assignment. Drag a spool slot to a model part — done. The slicer calculates purge volumes per transition: 120mm³ for PLA-to-PLA, 280mm³ for PLA-to-TPU, 450mm³ for PETG-to-ASA. You can override per-project, but defaults save 90% of calibration time.

Klipper Integration: Not Plug-and-Play Yet

Running Klipper on a P1S? The AMS 2S talks via USB-CAN bridge. You'll need the bambu-ams Klipper module (GitHub: kyleisah/bambu-ams) and a custom printer.cfg section. Expect 2-3 evenings of tuning. Mainsail shows filament status, but color changes require macros — no GUI dropdown yet.

The hardware is solid. The Klipper support is community-driven. If you need it today, stay on Bambu firmware. If you're willing to debug, the CAN bus opens full telemetry.

⚠️
WarningDon't mix abrasive filaments (carbon fiber, glow) with standard nozzles in the same AMS. Particles contaminate the selector. Dedicate one AMS unit per nozzle type.

Cost Reality Check

AMS 2S kit: $549 CAD. Eight spools of quality filament: $240. Purge waste per multi-material print: 15-40g. Break-even vs manual swaps hits at 22 multi-material jobs. If you print one dual-material part weekly, ROI is 5 months. Single-material shops? Hard pass.

Next step: Download the AMS 2S calibration STL from Bambu's GitHub. Print it in PLA first — validates selector timing, purge geometry, and humidity baseline. Then load your actual material combo. The machine handles the rest.
